Non-Needle Supportive Therapies

No Needles, No Problem!

It's common to cringe at the concept of needles. From a young age, we associate pain with the word. However, acupuncture needles are an entirely different breed.

The size of a cat whisker, an acupuncture "pin" moves smoothly and swiftly past the first layer of skin and into the muscle layer, avoiding most discomfort. The pins in acupuncture sessions activate the acupoints that reside along the body's channels with the most efficiency.

Still not convinced that needles are for you? That's okay! Other non-needle tools can easily stimulate the acupoints to create physiological health changes.

For example, check out my video on Pediatric Acupuncture, where my four-month-old baby boy experiences needle and non-needle techniques.

Cupping

Using glass or silicone cups to create a vacuum to increase warmth and circulation. The cupping method feels similar to a deep tissue massage but instead pulls the stagnant blood and lactic acid stuck in the muscle layer to the surface allowing your body to naturally expel the toxins.

Amorous octopus marks may occur (Michael Phelps’ back at the Olympics for example) but dissipate after a few days.

Gua Sha

A gentle scraping of the skin surface using a smooth tool to increase circulation. It leaves similar markings as the cups, but also dissipates after a few days. The discoloration is due to the blood stagnation rising to the surface to be expelled. The darker the color, the more the body needed it.

Castor Oil Hot Packs

Castor oil packs are a traditional remedy that is said to help with skin, liver or digestive conditions because of the special fatty acids in castor oil. The heat from the hot pack allows the castor oil to sink deeper into the skin, muscles, and fascia (connective tissue) of the area. Adding liniments can further benefit pain conditions while relaxing the muscles and soothing the area.

Moxibustion

Dried mugwort leaves are rolled into a stick or placed on the end of needles, then burned as a warming therapy during treatment.

Where acupuncture needles initiate movement and circulation while promoting your body’s own supplementing tendencies, moxibustion and herbs add strength and nourishment directly to the body.

*Note: I use smokeless moxa in my office, eliminating the smoke and strong smell of traditional moxibustion.

Jade & Tourmaline Heating Pad
(WITH NO EMFs!)

As you lie on your Jade Vitality heating pad, safe, deep-penetrating far-infrared heat from the jade stones works in your body to relieve pain, increase circulation, restore function, and promote deep relaxation.

As the tourmaline stones are heated, negatively charged ions purify the air around you and promote happiness, wellbeing, and stress relief.

Simply by laying down for your treatment, you receive a relaxing safeguard solution against the pain, stresses, and toxins we face daily.

Infrared
Heat Lamp

"Unlike ultraviolet light, which has damaging effects upon the tissues and cells of the body, infrared light helps cells regenerate or repair themselves. Infrared light also improves the circulation of oxygen-rich blood in the body, promoting faster healing of deep tissues and relieving pain" (news-medical.net).

A far-infrared heat lamp effectively soothes conditions such as muscle and joint stiffness and pain and muscular back pain.

The black-body emission heating plate is coated with a proprietary mineral formulation consisting of 33 elements instead of the more common infrared bulb. When activated by a built-in electric heating element, this mineral plate emits a particular band of far infrared electromagnetic energy, penetrating deep into the human body.

Lasers

Lasers are a non-needle technique used to stimulate acupuncture points and channels. By applying to specific points on the body, a healthy Qi (energy) flow is restored and symptoms are relieved. The red laser is associated with energizing and tonification (good for building strength in the body). In contrast, the blue laser is associated with relaxation, sedation, and tranquility (good for inflammation, excess conditions, and calming).

This treatment is completely painless and just as effective as a traditional acupuncture session. An excellent alternative for children and sensitive patients.

Shonishin

A non-needle technique used in pediatric acupuncture. Shonishin literally translates as sho “little,” ni “children”, and shin “needle”.

Using small tools, as opposed to needles, the practitioner rhythmically strokes, rubs, taps, and presses the skin to produce a variety of gentle stimulation sensations at acupuncture points or along channels.

Stimplus Pro
Micro-Stim

Auriculotherapy (ear acupuncture) is a powerful way to treat the entire body through a microsystem approach.
There are literally hundreds of auricular points and areas on the human ear, which can make choosing only a few to treat quite challenging.
The Stimplus Pro provides exact point location by determining the active points and is able to provide a gentle but powerful microcurrent treatment. Ear seeds are typically applied to continue the treatment benefits for up to five days. This device can also be used to stimulate body points in children

Pointoselect
Digital

Pointoselect Digital is the most advanced auriculotherapy point detection and treatment device on the market. Bipolar point detection with adjustable sensitivity ensures precisely the right point is found and treated. This device treats both deficient and excess points, meaning the right polarity is applied to the point based on what it needs (tonification or sedation).

This device is also useful for body points, acting as a non-needle technique. By applying gentle micro-current to acupuncture points, balance is achieved. Excellent for children and needle sensitive patients.

Electrical Stimulation (TENS)

Electrical acupuncture is the application of electrical current to acupuncture needles to stimulate the points with a safe, gentle electrical current. This provides continuous stimulation to benefit the body, especially regarding neurological diseases, fertility enhancement, pain, and more.

Similar to a TENS unit but with the electricity pulsing through the needles deeper into the body instead of pads placed on the skin.

Ion Pumping Cords

Designed by Dr. Manaka of Japan, Ion Pumping Cords are the fastest and most effective way to move Qi exactly where it needs to go.

A germanium diode in the center of the cord directs the flow of Qi from the black clip to the red clip, which redistributes excess Qi to deficient points via acupuncture needles to create balance.
